I find the best way to do a family portrait is at home, with everyone playing, working or otherwise spending time together. People are more comfy and relaxed at home than if they were going into a studio.
Everyone’s got a nice little area in the house, be it an evenly lit plain wall, bay window or the corner of a conservatory. You may need to move things around to get that space, so tidy up your backdrop, making sure there are no coffee mugs or anything knocking around. Keep an eye on what’s going on. Is there a lamp or a picture frame that will look like it’s growing out of somebody’s head? Make a decent little set up and then get the family together, nice and cuddly, for some great natural pictures.
